500 Dundas is a 7-story condo building currently under construction in Whitby. When complete, it will provide almost 5500 sq. m. of housing on a heritage site.
Before V+A took on this project, there had been a number of failed development attempts by other proponents. Previous proposals had been unable to reconcile the sites heritage features with the new development. The previous proposals were either not economically viable or didn’t meet heritage requirements.
V+A worked extensively with the Whitby heritage committee in a collaborative and creative process to create a scheme that balanced the needs of the developer with the need to ensure that the memory of the original house on the site was sufficiently preserved. V+A engaged with a large team; including city officials, heritage, a number of different consultants and the project stakeholders. The seven-story development features multi-level underground parking and strives to be energy efficient. The project also utilizes a green roof and takes steps to ensure that stormwater is being managed effectively.
